Overly large or protruding ears can cause embarrassment, especially for children. Fortunately, a relatively simple procedure called otoplasty (ear reshaping surgery), performed at our Northwest Indiana practice by Dr. Rebecca Garza, can reduce the size of the ears or set them closer to the head. Dr. Garza performs the majority of her otoplasty procedures on patients between the ages of 6 and 14. However, many older patients have the procedure without additional risk or discomfort.

More About Dr. GarzaCredentials You Can Trust
Talking It Over
During the consultation, Dr. Garza will examine the ears, discuss the details of the procedure and encourage you to ask questions. If you are seeking ear surgery for your child, Dr. Garza will ensure that your child is interested in having the procedure. Young children who are compelled by a parent to have otoplasty tend to have a more difficult recovery.
Procedure Specifics
Dr. Garza performs ear surgery on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. This means you or your child will sleep through the procedure and will return home the same day. The surgery can take 1 to 3 hours.
Otoplasty requires a small incision along the back of the ear. If needed, Dr. Garza may remove a small amount of cartilage and reshape the ear with permanent sutures. She will sometimes employ a technique that does not require the removal of cartilage. However, this alternate technique may require her to remove some skin and stitch the cartilage to create a natural fold to the ear. In either case, surgery will result in a slight permanent scar on the back of each ear.

After Your Ear Surgery Procedure
The ears will be bandaged thoroughly, and you will receive specific bathing instructions. Dr. Garza will prescribe pain medication to alleviate any discomfort, paying special attention to young patients’ age and weight to achieve the correct dosage.
Bandages will be removed within a few days, and the stitches will be removed about a week after surgery. Most adults return to work within 5 days, and children usually return to school after a week. The hardest part of recovery for children is avoiding ball sports or other activities for at least a month that might bend, hit, or pull the ears. Children who are eager to have the procedure are more likely to understand this restriction than those who are not.
