Dr. Rebecca Garza’s breast reduction patients from Munster, Crown Point, and surrounding Northwest Indiana communities often say their procedures have significantly improved their lives and enhanced their self-esteem. Many say they waited too long to have the procedure.
Dr. Garza, a board-certified plastic surgeon, performs breast reduction to help Indiana women who experience back, shoulder and neck pain because of their overly large breasts. This procedure can also relieve the physical restrictions, clothing issues, and unwanted attention often associated with excessive breast size.
Talking It Over
In general, breast reduction can improve your quality of life. It offers a wide range of benefits including:
- Enhanced self-esteem
- Freedom from the physical pain and burden of heavy breasts
- Relief from self-consciousness
- Increased ability to comfortably participate in physical activities
During your consultation, you can ask questions and discuss your goals and concerns with complete confidentiality. Dr. Garza will explain all of your options for surgery and possible outcomes. To help communicate your goals, you may want to bring pictures of breast sizes and shapes you like.
Procedure Specifics
You will be under general anesthesia, so you will sleep through your surgery. Dr. Garza normally performs breast reduction as an outpatient procedure, meaning you can return home the same day. However, you will need someone to drive you home and care for you for the first few days.
During the procedure, Dr. Garza removes excess skin, fat and tissue from the breasts. She also repositions the nipples and, if desired, reduces the size of the areolas (the darker skin surrounding the nipples). She then reshapes the breasts to make them physically smaller yet natural-looking.

More Information
- Dr. Garza also performs a breast lift as part of breast reduction. To only correct issues such as sagging and skin laxity with minimal to no removal of breast tissue, she may recommend a breast lift instead of a reduction procedure.
After Your Breast Reduction Procedure
After surgery, you will have stitches and possibly drainage tubes to remove any excess fluids. Your breasts will be bandaged for support and to protect the incisions. You will receive detailed instructions about keeping the incisions clean, and the stitches will be removed within the first week.
Recovery from breast reduction surgery is usually less painful than most women expect. This is because the nerves and skin at the surgery site have been stretched considerably for a long time, which makes them less sensitive. You will be sore for a few days, and you can manage any discomfort with prescribed medication. You can resume light activities after a few days, depending on your level of soreness.
